Limits & storage

What a free site includes, and where the ceilings are.

Storage

Free accounts include storage sufficient for a normal hand-built site; premium raises it. Video eats the most space by far. One uncompressed clip can outweigh an entire text-and-images site.

Backups

Backups are kept automatically so you can roll back a bad edit, with more retained on premium. Keep your own copy of anything irreplaceable. The safest backup is the one you control.

Keeping a site small

Most oversized sites are oversized for one reason: unresized images. A photo straight from a phone is often 4000 pixels wide and several megabytes, displayed in a 600-pixel column. Resizing it before upload can cut the file by 95% with no visible difference, and it makes your pages load far faster on a phone.

The same applies to audio and video. If a clip is background material rather than the point of the page, encoding it smaller is almost always the right call.

Fair use

Sites exist to be read by people. Using an account purely as a file drop for hotlinking elsewhere, or to serve content unrelated to a website, is what fair-use limits are aimed at.
